Preview: Episode 4

A TARDIS, two sonic screwdrivers, and Amy's invitation from The Impossible Astronaut

Episode 4 delves deep into Doctor Who with guests Marlene Maginot and Danny Mastrangelo. So if you like Doctor Who, tomorrow’s episode should be a fun listen. If you’re not familiar with the show, well…you’re gonna need a cheat sheet.

This should help, but be warned, the links are to a Doctor Who wiki that in some cases contains HUGE SPOILERS:

The Doctor is a Time Lord, an alien from the planet Gallifrey that has two hearts and responds to mortal injuries by regenerating into a new person rather than dying (although there are circumstances under which a Timelord can be killed, but that’s a whole can of worms you don’t need to open for the sake of the podcast). So the Doctor is often referred to by whatever number incarnation he’s on (i.e. ninth or Nine). When the series was revamped in 2005, it featured Christopher Eccleston as the ninth Doctor. The tenth Doctor (and arguably most beloved in the whole franchise) was David Tennant, and Matt Smith is currently playing the eleventh Doctor.

The TARDIS – The Doctor travels through time and space in a ship that from the outside appears to be a blue police phone box from the 1960s but is bigger on the inside. The name is an acronym standing for Time And Relative Dimension In Space.

Sonic screwdriver – The Doctor abhors weapons and instead carries a sonic screwdriver. When the Doctor regenerates, his screwdriver changes as well.

Companions – The Doctor often has a human friend accompanying him on his travels, most often a pretty girl. These friends are referred to as companions, and they include Rose, Martha, Donna, Amy Pond, Rory, and River Song.

Other characters important to the Doctor but not technically companions are Wilf and Craig.

Showrunners – Russell T. Davies ran the show during the time of the ninth and tenth Doctors. Steven Moffat took over from him when the Doctor regenerated into Eleven and is the current showrunner.

Villains/monsters – The most notable nemesis the Doctor’s faced since the 2005 revamp is another Time Lord called the Master. Daleks, Cybermen, Weeping Angels, and the Silence are other important antagonists in the show.

The Series 6 break – Series 6 was aired in two halves, with the first 7 episodes in the spring of 2011 and the last 6 episodes in the autumn of 2011. The episodes comprise one season but the break in the middle does feature a cliffhanger type event that allows each half of the series to feel somewhat independent despite being part of one larger story arc.

To understand Rory being plastic/waiting for Amy, as well as the Pandorica, check out the two-part series five finale, The Pandorica Opens and The Big Bang.

To understand the Flesh and gangers, check out the series six two-parter consisting of The Rebel Flesh and The Almost People.

The Teselectra is from Let’s Kill Hitler as well as another episode, but telling you even that much is already kind of a big spoiler, so I’m not gonna tell you which one.

Whew. See you tomorrow!

What an incredible nerdfest! Loved it! Now if you really want to go back in time you might want to watch some of the Catherine Cookson miniseries on Netflix. Eccleston and Tennant and some other Who castmembers show off their very young acting talents. In fact, watching any of the British costume dramas made in the 80′s on forward it’s a veritable feast of talented actors you will recognise. (That is if you want to sit through a bit of hokeyness.) Huzzah!

Well, they showed eipsode two two Sundays ago and repeated one and two last Sunday due to the Super Bowl. I personally like it though. Its a mystery slowly unravelling but not like the molasses-like pace of LOST. Plus its a better show compared to what they used to put on when the channel first aired.Did you see KNIGHTS OF PROSPERITY? Now that’s a hilarious show. Very original and different than the other sitcoms on TV.
