Episode 24: Underappreciated video games

Cover art for 999: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors and Psychonauts

Guest Danny Mastrangelo (Silhouette Games; Been There, Played That) returns to discuss video games he and Jen love but find casual gamers are usually unaware of. From visual novels to shooters to 8 bit and more, these games stand out because they’re exceptionally immersive, addictive, creepy, or just plain crazy. Actually, most of them fall into more than one of these descriptors. And one might even help get you through a breakup.

Been a little while since I’ve commented, but I enjoyed this episode so much, I had to come and give you props! It was the perfect blend of some games that I knew, some games I had forgotten about, and some games that I had never heard of. Loved it. Keep ‘em coming, Jen!

Side note: They recently adapted Pheonix Wright into a movie here in Japan. I saw it on opening day. It was ridiculous, and not very good, but I kind of appreciated it as a fan of the game.

And my recommendation as an under-appreciated game would be Beyond Good & Evil. Was originally on PS2 and Xbox, but you can download it on either Xbox Live or PSN now. I remember enjoying that a ton during my freshman year of college.

Glad you liked it! I’ll have to tell Danny about that movie because I’m sure if it’s at all possible to dig it up in the U.S., he’ll want to see it. I’ve heard of Beyond Good & Evil but never tried it. I’ll check it out on Xbox Live for sure! I love that I’m getting even more game recommendations after people listen to this episode.
